I chat to Brazilian outsider artist and musician Arthur Ricardo. His English is limited but I’ve left things just as he wrote them and let his amazing work do the talking!
Hey Arthur, it’s great to chat to you here at Om Pom Happy. I don’t know which I love more, your art or your music, but they kind of work so well together. Let’s start with your art…
Hi Cand, it is really nice talking to you. Your interest in my music and my art makes me so happy. I can say that I have a unique way of working, or hold on to one idea of how to do things. My work is spontaneous and intuitive. I like to write songs and record them as a kind of diary, as I like to paint pictures and make fools and quick scribbles, or go around and making pictures and filming videos to illustrate my songs but also make soundtracks drawings. A daily record of how I see the world.
Your work has a great freedom and sense of fun about it…
They are usually simple and quick impressions of everyday things. But also there are my other jobs that require more time and dedication. I would not know to explain in an accurate way on a permanent and unique style, because I have a lot of curiosity and interest in experiencing new sensations and different ways to practice the world.
Are you formally trained?
I learned to paint and play instruments alone of my way, seeing things that influenced me and practicing at home. Today I do a course in graphic design, but I see this as a great influence on the way I like to really get things done.
And tell us about your sculptures …
Are objects that casually meeting when do small walks on beaches, fields and random parts of the city where I live.
And now to your music. I love it – it’s like Zappa does Calypso!
Currently I have a band with two friends called QUINT, I play guitar and sing, and we played with some frequency in the city.
I’ve had another band before that – Os Bonnies – we played our songs, a rock and roll more nervous, you know?
Parallel to this, I have a project that is only mine, recording and producing my songs and albums, and playing and recording all the instruments at home.
You live in Brazil. What’s the Brazilian art scene like?
Brazil is a very big country and there are millions of things and people to see, hear and places to go. I focus on things closest friends and that somehow influence me. You are invited to come here and draw their own ideas about all this. 😉
Arthur, thanks so much for chatting to us! How can we find out more about you?
