the home of Francis Upritchard and Martino Gamper

When in East London a short while ago I was looking in an estate agent’s window when I was surprised to see the home of Venice Biennale artist Francis Upritchard and her furniture designer husband Martino Gamper.  I have loved their home ever since I first saw it in a magazine, partly because it is a modest, ex social housing property, but also because it is bursting with design and colour.

Upritchard purchased the house when it was in a bad state of repair.  It was previously occupied by multiple tenants and, restricted to a tight budget, Francis enlisted the help of friends and family to slowly restore it.  This included the cleaning of, and laying of hundreds of reclaimed wooden floor tiles.

You can see the tiles in the wonderful kitchen.  I love the different coloured cupboards…

Francis met Martino Gamper, an Italian furniture designer, who became her partner and moved into the house.

His chair designs sit throughout the house…

The house is small so Upritchard and Gamper opened up the ground floor, combining the kitchen, dining and living spaces as one…
